The best Madrid private food tours & experiences

Madrid has recently joined the ranks as one of Europe’s culinary capitals for good reason: it’s the place to find authentic, typical Spanish food in all its forms. Each Spanish village has its own specialties, and Madrid is the city that neatly packages them in one vibrant place. For locals, eating at restaurants in Madrid is almost always a joyful, convivial event that deserves dedicated hours every day. The city has no shortage of gastronomic greats – the best restaurants in Madrid are also some of the finest in the world – but it’s the traditional tapas bars and hearty feasts shared under centuries-old ceilings that make dining here such a delight.

      Not your typical tapas

In Madrid, tapas is part of the fabric of society, a national pastime ingrained into the city’s culture. With so many of the best restaurants in Madrid being traditional tapas bars, choosing the right place for these small plates of pure Spanish delight can be daunting. Whether you head to an old-school, down-to-earth tapas bar for classic, century-old Spanish snacks like patatas bravas and Iberian ham, or watch the world go by at a sleek, upmarket bar for a more global take on traditional tapas, this unique slice of the Spanish food experience is a must-have in its capital city.

From homestyle cooking to super-hip cuisine

In Madrid, the local culinary staples (fried cod, snails, oxtail) prepared to perfection are readily available around every corner. Many of the best restaurants in Madrid serve homely delights like garlic soup, hearty stews, and wood-fired meats – the type of food that feels like a comforting embrace. But it’s not all traditional fare: a whirlwind of exciting new flavors can be found across restaurants in Madrid. The new generation of chefs has ushered in trendy Asian fusion food, experimental tasting menus, and upmarket restaurants doing riffs on the city’s culinary classics.

      Spain in one city

Cities throughout Spain have their own surprisingly varied regional cuisines, from paella in Valencia to the hearty casseroles of Cataluña. But all six of Spain’s national roads lead to a marker in the heart of Madrid dubbed “Kilometer Zero”, so it’s no surprise restaurants in Madrid have naturally evolved into a combination of styles and flavors from all across the country. The restaurants in Madrid are the most diverse in Spain, allowing you to eat food from virtually every region – whether you try the sauces and seafood of Galicia the simple sautéed peppers from the Pyrenees.

Joanna was our guide and she was fantastic! My son and I found her so easy to get along with. She was very friendly, knowledgeable of the history of the various barrios we walked through, and she turned us on to some some fantastic food and drink treats. Her organization, CityUnscripted, has a real gem of a person/tour guide in Joanna.

Wondering typical neighborhoods, sipping coffee in a local shop, discussing the joys and challenges of today's Spain, sharing life experiences over delicious food in an authentic Spanish restaurant - these were all part of our amazing day with Silvia. Through Silvia we learned so much about life in Spain and its people, one of our primary motivations for travel. This was our first experience with CityUnscripted and it was much more like meeting up with a friend of a friend instead of a tour guide. We signed up for an 8-hour day which I thought may be too long. But the day flew by as we wandered, ducked into neighborhood stores and churches, watched children running through parks, and got to know Silvia, an innovative entrepreneur and journalist with a insatiable curiosity about everything around her and a perpetual twinkle in her eye, and her life. We also did some touristy things but saw them through the eyes of a local. Now back home, when we think of Madrid we do think of the Prado and the Palace and the churros. But we especially think of Silvia and how she lovingly shared with us the city she knows and loves. We will definitely seek out other experiences with CityUnscripted in our future travels. Highly recommended!

We had a 3 person tour (myself and my 2 kids, ages 8 and 12) with Silvia. She was great. She showed us everything we wanted to see with some extras too. We walked a lot but also had time to rest in a beautiful park or shop. Silvia is friendly and spoke easily with my kids. Her English is perfect. I would definitely recommend her.
