Italy is simultaneously a gastronomy giant, a natural masterpiece, and an artistic and architectural astonishment – it’s a country with more cultural contributions than can be counted, and even more incredible things to do. Thousands of years of ad hoc urban development throughout Italy have formed one of the most dynamic countries in the world. From flawless natural landscapes, both glacial and green, to intricate architecture spanning centuries, Italy’s mind-blowing beauty is matched only by its cultural cachet: frescoed churches, precious art, and tireless tradition. Between all these treasures, the things to do in Italy are as memorable as they are unmissable.
From gorgeous cityscapes to artistic treasures, Italy has several attractions shared by its major cities. But even with these similarities, each city brings its own unique things to do in Italy. There’s Rome, where icons of Italy’s golden age dominate the skyline, and Venice, a floating fairytale connected by hundreds of bridges. Then there’s Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, and Milan, the supermodel of cities. Historic Naples, a city in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, may be famous for its pizza, but Bologna is the true culinary capital with some of the best things to do in Italy.
One of the world’s most iconic cuisines, Italian food comprises a broad collection of regional culinary styles that together reflect the country’s diversity. But no matter where in Italy you find yourself, the pasta is melt-in-the-mouth, the pastries are freshly baked, and aperitivo hour is buzzing. Whether you feast on super-simple cacio e pepe and a glass of wine in Rome, grab a crustless sandwich from a street food stall in on-the-move Milan, or settle in for a sit-down dinner of slow-cooked bolognese in Bologna, some of the most wonderful things to do in Italy revolve around food.
When night falls, the atmosphere palpably changes and the list of things to do in Italy gets even longer. No city is lacking in vibrant nightlife, and the day doesn’t end when the sun goes down. Trendy Milan is home to some of the best nightclubs in the world; evenings in Rome revolve around late-night dinners and wine bars; and Venice is overflowing with sophisticated jazz clubs and upmarket bars. But between all the things to do in Italy by night, one tradition is a constant throughout all its cities: sunset starts with aperitivo – drinks and small plates – at a crowded local bar.

Cristiano our local guide was awesome. He curated the tour to our liking and he threw in some hidden gems one would not know about without a private guide. This I would recommend to anyone who has 3-5 hours to spend in Bologna.

My private tour with Claudio was both incredibly knowledgeable and very entertaining. We explored the whole city, and I learned about so many hidden spots and fascinating pieces of Bologna’s history that I never knew existed. Thanks to the tour, I feel much more confident exploring on my own for the rest of my stay—and I came away with fantastic food tips too! Thank you, Claudio, for such a great experience.
