We came to City Unscripted with an unusual request: rather than typical Tokyo sightseeing, we wanted to understand modern Japan's economic and social story—post-war reconstruction, the bubble era, generational and cultural shifts. Nobu took this seriously, spending time beforehand designing a tour around three carefully chosen neighborhoods that would spark these conversations. What made Nobu perfect for our request was his bicultural experience—having lived in the US for high school and college before returning to Japan gave him an incredible comparative lens. We discussed work culture, political engagement, generational differences, and regional ambitions with real nuance. He also wove in great food stops and was wonderful with our 7-year-old son. The tour ended near Kichijoji, the neighborhood where Nobu grew up, giving us a glimpse of a part of Tokyo that locals frequent more than tourists—a nice window into everyday life that lined up perfectly with our next appointment.

Nobu was an excellent local guide and his situation since he lived in the US he has been able to describe his life in Japan having lived on both side of the world - a very personal guide ever so friendly like taking a stroll with a new friend - he went above and beyond my favourite possibly the Kiyosumi gardens and when he took me to the place he grew up and shared some memories of the haunts he used to frequent.
