Marc Candes

Hello, I’m Marc.

I live in Batignolles.
I work in Batignolles.
I hang out in Montparnasse, Le Marais, Quartier Latin.

About me

Hi! I am a sightseeing guide with a passion for history. Is it your first time in Paris? Second? You feel like there’s too much to see and you’ll never have enough time? I’m your man! I have been guiding since I was a student in Literature at Sorbonne University. My love of Paris never stops growing and it’s something I really like to share with others. My tours are in English and Spanish, even French if you prefer, essentially in the morning but I can sometimes arrange afternoon tours so if you have special demands please let me know. I would love being your encyclopedia when you’ll visit. Marc

PARIS, HALF DAY IN PARIS WITH A LOCALMarc

Our City Host Extraordinaire (part 2)

I’ve a teacher, tour guide, and raconteur for much of my professional life. Marc’s among the best in my mind. And he obviously loves his roles, not to mention that he is a talented musician as well. Plus, he’s just fun to be around and does everything with ease and a good bit of self-deprecating humor. He helped us to negotiate the city’s subways and chuckled at himself when he got a little disoriented at one stop. He knows where to go for simple fun, entertainment and food! We lunched on delicious fare at a favorite city restaurant, Petit Vendome, and enjoyed a glass of delicious wine from Brouilly. Marc helped us with shopping suggestions for our grandson, great niece and nephew. He frequently oriented us with landmarks and points of reference in relationship to our hotel. When he left us to get on with the rest of his day, he always asked if there was anything else he could do or to reassure us about something. We’ll remember our time in Paris with happiness and a new appreciation for the city. Marc is responsible for most, if not all of it. We recommend him without any reservation what so ever. City Unscripted retains a great host in this guy. He’s a real ambassador!

Our City Host Extraordinaire (Part 1)

Our two days in Paris with city host, Marc, could not have been better. Several descriptors work when we think of him. He is witty, kind, urbane and wonderfully opinionated when it come his beloved city. Marc provided historical and cultural contexts for nearly everything we did and saw in wandering this glorious place. He knows its history, its architecture, its art and its “hidden in plain sight” delights. He is always ready to point out perspectives that may go unnoticed with new visitors. For two senior travelers, one with a new knee and one who thinks she can keep up with trained athletes, he was remarkably adaptable and very observant of how we were doing at all times. He was unfailingly courteous and quick to point out pot holes, uneven surfaces and tricky cobble stones. Our museum visits-L’Orangerie, The Rodan-were first rate simply because, again, he is a student of their cultural influences, their history and the art of the artists who filled them. Saint Chappelle, the Gothic 13 th century royal chapel comes to mind. It simply stopped us in our tracks. He easily and fluently pointed how we might view and consider the stunning window art embracing us, contextualizing everything for our appreciation. Quite cool!
