I’m Alex Before ending up in Japan, many years back, I had a nomad life across several Asian countries for many years as well. I spent most of that time in India, where among other activities I had my first experiences as a tour guide. There I also met my wife, and when the relationship got more serious we decided to settle down and have a more stable life, we chose Japan where she is from. Since then I had many personal experiences in this country in different fields such as human relations, jobs in different sectors, trips, bizarre situations, etc, experiences that I always like to share, together with some knowledge about aspects of the culture that I studied for years, just for the sake of getting knowledge without thinking that I would do this activity later on. By the way, I appreciate a lot the human factor, and besides having a responsibility I enjoy a lot just meeting and being with new people. In other words; I love this job, I love the culture I show, and I love human communication in itself. One of my favourite parts was visiting the Sake distilleries in the south- they were super interesting but also the surrounding area was virtually free of tourists and felt like a more authentically Japanese area. Kyoto is a fabulous, historic and traditional Japanese city, and our guide Mia made everything “come alive”. We had very limited time in the city, and had to reschedule our tour in Kyoto due to an incoming typhoon changing the entire itinerary of the cruise we were travelling on, such that we would arrive in Kyoto at different times on a different day. Mia had been assigned to be our guide on our initially booked tour, and had been very proactive in communicating with us and subsequently designing a tour to meet with our initial requests. Then, when our cruise itinerary was changed at the last minute, and despite the fact that we had surpassed the deadline for cancellation or refund, City Unscripted (the tour company) went out of their way to do all they could to reschedule our tour and accommodate us, as we were not entitled to a refund. Hello, I'm Michael, and I would like to introduce myself and share with you why I live in Kyoto and love it so much.

My journey began seven years ago when I took a break from my Italian restaurant in Houston, Texas, and traveled to Japan. Starting in Sendai and Matsushima, I went down to Miyajima and Hiroshima, and then I worked my way back to Tokyo. Along the way, I stopped in Kobe, Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto. After only two days and nights in Kyoto, I knew that this city was special. Once back in the USA, I made a plan for the next chapter of my life. Living in Japan! Moving and living here has been, and is so rewarding. The people are so kind, the country is amazingly beautiful and the food is absolutely delicious. During the first few years, I explored the countryside and traversed most of the city, worked as a rafting guide on the Setagawa River, and, up until last December, owned and operated one of only three Cajun establishments in all of Japan. My hobbies include surfing, scuba, camping, enjoying wines from across the globe, museums, the fine arts and obviously cooking. I hope you will allow me to spend a little time with you so I can show you what makes Kyoto one of a kind. Thank you

We had such an amazing day touring Kyoto with Tess! We booked the 8 hour walking tour starting at 8AM and Tess did a great job curating our experience to exactly what we were looking for. We went to the Fushimi Inari shrine, Yasaka Pagoda, Kiyomizu-dera temple, Golden Pavillion, the Arashiyama bamboo grove, and more. She did a great job managing our time and getting us from place to place in a seamless manner. She was also very attentive to our needs, always asking if we need water or the bathroom. She was a great photographer and knew all the good photo spots as well. Additionally she was very informed of the history. Tess did a great job giving us more recommendations for restaurants and places to go for the rest of our trip. She was so friendly and also hilarious. If you are lucky enough to be paired with her, you will most certainly have a perfect experience!

He knew all the best spots to visit that didn’t have long lines and introduced us to customs and activities we never would have discovered on our own. In addition to touring, he took incredible photos and videos of us throughout the day so we could remember our visit, and he even shared restaurant recommendations and helped set us up for our next stop. Kiyoto is such a happy and friendly guy who loves sharing his hometown with others. He truly made our time in Kyoto feel even more special!

No. Our experiences are unscripted and designed around you. Instead of following a rigid itinerary, your host will plan a personalized journey that feels natural, immersive, and unique.

What if I don’t know what I want to explore?

That’s completely fine! Select an experience theme or a flexible discovery experience, and after booking, answer a few questions so your host can design the perfect experience for you.

Will I be able to speak to my host beforehand?

Yes. After we match you with your host, we’ll introduce you so you can chat about the plan and make any tweaks before the day.

How do you match me with a host?

We ask a few questions. After you book, you’ll fill out a short questionnaire about your interests and travel style. We’ll then match you with the best local host to design your experience.

Can I request specific places or types of stops?

Yes! After booking, you will receive a questionnaire where you can highlight must-visit spots and anything else you’d like to include, and your host will craft your experience around them.

Will I know my itinerary in advance?

Yes, you will have the opportunity to chat with your host directly and agree on a plan for the day. However, there’s always room for spontaneity and local surprises!

Can I mix different themes in one experience?

Yes! You can blend food, culture, history, neighborhoods, or even a bit of nightlife if time allows. Just share your interests in the questionnaire, and your host will build the day around them.

Can my host meet me at my accommodation?

Hotel meet-ups are available upon request in central areas. If you're staying outside the city, your host will recommend the best meeting spot and guide you with directions.

Can I cancel if my plans change?

Yes. You can cancel for free up to 24 hours before your experience date—no questions asked.
