We had a brilliant guided city tour with Kay on our first full day in Tokyo. It was our first visit to Japan and we were staying in Shinjuku, and we hadn’t even attempted the subway yet as it felt very overwhelming. Kay very kindly offered to meet us at our hotel rather than a nearby station and showed us how to use the subway system. He was fantastic at explaining everything, including how to download passes onto our Apple Wallets and how the different subway lines work. This made getting around for the rest of our trip so much easier and gave us the confidence to use the subway several times a day. Kay planned a great half-day tour and took us to places he thought we’d enjoy, including Meiji Jingu Shrine, the war memorial shrine and park connected to the Imperial family, Electric Town in Akihabara, and Harajuku with its lovely shopping streets. We covered a lot in a short time without it ever feeling rushed. Kay was super friendly, very knowledgeable, and made the tour thoroughly enjoyable. I was genuinely sad to say goodbye at the end. Thanks to Kay, the rest of our stay in Tokyo was so much easier and more enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Our guide, Shoko, was AWESOME!!! She was highly communicative before our tour in order to prepare a tour around exactly what we wanted to see. We got to see lots of places off the beaten path!! Even after the tour was over she put together other places for us to visit and restaurants for us to try!! I highly recommend putting your time in Shoko's hands!!!

Chiara was a joy! She was patient, and extremely flexible!!! She was also kind! I was having some pain, and she was understanding when I made requests to sit down, numerous times! She has an obvious command of the city, with all its subdivisions! She is also extremely knowledgeable with regard to Japanese culture! At the end of the tour,, she waited with me, until my Uber arrived! Hope to see her on the next trip!!

This tour was absolutely the highlight of our time in Tokyo. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and could answer every one of our obscure questions about history, art, language, and philosophy. I cannot recommend this tour enough. I do sometimes write negative reviews (see my profile), so please trust me when I say that this is just an amazing tour!!

FAQs

Your questions, answered

What’s the best time of year to visit Tokyo?

Tokyo enchants year-round, but spring and autumn stand out. In spring, fleeting cherry blossoms inspire poetic hanami gatherings, while autumn paints the city in crimson and gold. October offers mild sunshine, perfect for exploring. Summers pulse with festivals and heat; winters are clear, calm, and reveal Mt. Fuji’s snowy peak.

How many days should I plan to spend in Tokyo?

Spend 3–5 days in Tokyo to explore its temples, gardens, lively streets, and unique neighborhoods. With a week or more, dive deeper into local culture, uncover hidden districts, and enjoy day trips to Hakone, Kawagoe, Nikko, or Kamakura. However long you stay, tailor your trip to what excites you most.

What are the must-see attractions in Tokyo?

Tokyo’s must-sees mix tradition and modernity: visit Senso-ji Temple, Shibuya Crossing, Meiji Shrine, and Tsukiji Market. Admire Tokyo Skytree, Omotesando’s design, and Yanaka’s old-world charm. The city’s beauty lies in contrasts—peaceful shrines beside neon streets, and hidden gems waiting to surprise you.

Which neighborhoods are best to stay in?

Tokyo’s neighborhoods each reveal a unique side of the city. Shinjuku is ideal for first-timers, full of food, shops, and nightlife. Shibuya buzzes with youthful energy, while Asakusa offers old Tokyo charm near Senso-ji. For a slower pace, try Daikanyama, Nakameguro, or Yanaka. With great transport, every area is easy to explore.

How do I get around Tokyo (transportation options)?

Tokyo’s world-class transport makes getting around effortless. The Metro and JR lines are clean, fast, and cover nearly the whole city—no car needed. Use a Suica or Pasmo card for easy travel. Walk to uncover hidden gems, and start with a local walking experience to beat jet lag and gain confidence exploring.

Is Tokyo safe for tourists? What about solo or women travelers?

Tokyo is one of the world’s safest cities, ideal for all travelers—even solo adventurers. Crime is rare, locals are courteous, and public transport feels safe day or night. Still, stay alert and protect your belongings. Many solo travelers find Tokyo easy to explore, with local hosts happy to share insider tips.

What are some local foods or dishes I should try in Tokyo?

Tokyo is a paradise for food lovers, from Michelin-starred sushi to cozy ramen joints. Try edomae sushi, tempura, tonkatsu, okonomiyaki, and yakitori. Taste monjayaki in Tsukishima or explore depachika for bento and sweets. A first meal with a local host doubles as a dining “survival guide” full of insider tips and delicious discoveries.

What are some hidden gems or off-the-beaten-path spots in Tokyo?

Beyond the neon lights, Tokyo hides peaceful corners and hidden gems. Stroll Yanaka’s nostalgic lanes, browse Shimokitazawa’s vintage shops and cafés, or wander forest trails near Meguro. Visit Gotokuji Temple, home of the lucky cat. With a local host, you’ll uncover the authentic Tokyo few visitors ever experience.

When is cherry blossom season (and autumn foliage season) in Tokyo?

Cherry blossom season in Tokyo typically occurs from late March to early April, while autumn foliage usually peaks from mid-November to early December. Timing can vary slightly each year depending on weather conditions.

What language is spoken in Tokyo, and do locals speak English?

Japanese is Tokyo’s main language, though basic English is often understood in tourist areas. Signs, menus, and stations usually include English translations, making navigation easy. Learning a few phrases or using a translation app helps, and your local host can bridge any gaps for a smoother, more authentic experience.

What’s the tipping culture in Tokyo?

Tipping isn’t part of Japanese culture, and locals rarely do it. However, as a visitor, a small tip given personally as a thank-you is perfectly acceptable. If your host makes your experience extra special, feel free to offer a gratuity in any amount that feels right to you.

What are typical opening hours for shops, restaurants, and museums?

Most Tokyo shops open around 10 AM and close by 8 or 9 PM. Restaurants serve lunch from 11 AM–2 PM and dinner from 5 PM–10 PM, though cafés may open earlier and some spots stay open all day. Museums generally run 10 AM–5 or 6 PM, often closing Mondays. Hours vary, so it’s best to check in advance.

Can I use credit cards in Tokyo, or do I need cash?

Credit cards are widely accepted in Tokyo’s hotels, stores, and major restaurants, but cash is still useful for small shops, local eateries, and temple or garden fees. Keep coins for small payments. ATMs at convenience stores and post offices accept international cards, and your host can help you find nearby options.
