Step back in time to ancient Tokyo and explore the city's historic Yanaka district, its people and its traditions. Led by a knowledgeable local host, this is a great way to experience daily life in historic Japan.
You'll start with a visit to the charming Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street, where the old-town "Shitamachi" atmosphere thrives. Here, you'll pass through quaint antique stores and sweet shops whilst savoring local snacks. There is a lot to see and do here, your host will be able to point out all the ‘must-sees’ and explain their significance. I could spend all day here, there is something about this street that grabs me each time I visit.
Next, take a serene stroll through Tokyo's Yanaka Cemetery. Not a usual stop along the tourist trail, this site is also known as "Cat Cemetery" because of the feline friends that are attracted to the sun-warmed gravestones. Discover the resting places and the stories of notable figures from Japan's Meiji era, and don't miss Cherry Blossom Street, where cherry blossoms bloom in spring. Stunning.
Afterward, unleash your creativity at a local cafe where you'll paint your own maneki-neko (lucky cat) while sipping on artisanal coffee. Paint it with your favorite patterns and colors, and leave with a keepsake that will hold your memories of Japan forever. Do you know the significance of the lucky cat? Be sure to ask your host whilst you create your masterpiece.
Finish your journey with a trip through Nezu Shrine, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Yanaka. Explore its picturesque grounds adorned with vermilion torii gates and ancient stone lanterns. This is such a tranquil, beautiful, and well-preserved little gem, if nothing else it's an amazing photo opportunity!
And that's it! You've experienced off-the-beaten-path Japan and it’s history. Japan is laced with deep historical significance, this is just a slice. I hope you’ve created memories for a lifetime and are excited to check out some of my other experiences.
