Make the most of your first day in Tokyo with this curated experience that grabs the best and brings them up front for you to see. You’ll cover some of my favorite spots and I hope it inspires you to come back and explore more.
Your experience starts off with a visit to Shibuya Sky, where you'll ascend to breathtaking heights and witness the sprawling cityscape from above. Your host will point out areas and sights of interest. This is a wonderful vista and an excellent viewpoint of some of the places you will soon be much closer to.
Next, you'll make a trip to the busiest pedestrian intersection in the world - Shibuya Scramble Crossing - and explore the surrounding area. It's odd that a crossing would be so famous but you don't have to spend too much time here to understand why. It's intense energy and a great video or photo spot. Your host will help you get the most creative output here.
You'll then dive into the eclectic fashion and vibrant street culture of Harajuku at Takeshita Street. Lose yourself in a whirlwind of colorful shops, quirky boutiques, and delicious street food stalls. It’s great for souvenirs, photos and stories of the city you wouldn’t expect. Your host will help you navigate the bustle and the good times.
Next, I've arranged for you to make a stop at Meiji Jingu, a majestic Shinto shrine nestled amidst lush greenery. Learn about its rich history and traditions as you soak in the tranquil atmosphere at this urban oasis.
Did you work up an appetite with all this walking? Good. Prepare your taste buds for a culinary adventure at Omoide Yokocho, also known as Memory Lane or ‘Piss Alley’ (nicer than it sounds). Explore narrow alleys lined with cozy izakayas serving up mouthwatering yakitori, grilled seafood, and other Japanese delights. Immerse yourself in the nostalgic atmosphere of post-war Tokyo while savoring the authentic flavors of local cuisine.
You can now relax, satisfied that you've immersed yourself in the best local culture, history, and cuisine. This is my ideal first day for first-time travelers, but feel free to tailor it to your specific interests.
