Embark on a lively journey through Mexico City's most iconic cantinas, where history, culture, and local flavors come alive with every sip.
Here’s everything you need to know before your day unfolds.
Ah, Mexico - the land of tequila and good times. It's one of my favorite spots to sip a Mezcal cocktail or down a tequila shot while hanging with new friends. So, get ready to sip, savor, and soak up the lively vibes of Mexico City's most iconic cantinas on this unforgettable experience through the heart of the historic center. This isn't just an experience —it's a deep dive into the stories, flavors, and hidden corners that make these cantinas legendary. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or just someone who loves a good drink in a great atmosphere, this journey has something for everyone.
First stop: Cantina El Gallo de Oro. Picture this: a cantina that's been around since 1974, where history seeps from the walls as much as the tequila flows from the bar. With its distinctive horseshoe-shaped cabinets and the kind of food that makes you feel like you've discovered a local secret, this spot is a true gem. But it's not just the flavors that will keep you coming back—this place played a role in shaping modern Mexico. It's rumored that the very idea for the Secretary of Public Education was cooked up right here, with none other than Justo Sierra, the father of compulsory education in Mexico, as a regular. So, as you nibble on some traditional bites, just imagine the revolutionary ideas that might have been sparked over a drink or two. ¡Es totalmente histórico!
Next, stroll over to Mancera Bar, a cantina that's been standing proud since the 19th century. Once part of a grand hotel, today it's a cozy, character-filled spot that packs a punch with its menu. Fancy some tapas? ¡Siempre! Luckily, they've got you covered with a perfect mix of Spanish and Mexican flavors that'll have your taste buds doing a happy dance. And let's not forget the drinks—whether you're in the mood for a classic Mexican tequila or something a bit more international, this bar's got a selection that'll make you want to linger a little longer. The vibe here is a blend of old-world charm and modern-day buzz—just the right mix to keep the good times rolling.
Ready to step into a world where bulls and matadors reign supreme? Cantina La Faena is up next, and this place is like walking into a bullfighting museum with a bar at its heart. Founded in 1954, it's decked out with everything from bullfighting costumes to vintage oil paintings and even an altar to the Virgin of Guadalupe. The whole place is steeped in the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. Locals love it, and you'll see why as you sip your drink surrounded by a collection of wooden telephones and the kind of history you can almost touch. ¡Olé!
Now, take things up a notch at La Opera, a cantina that's got stories as rich as the tequila they serve. Founded in 1876 by two French sisters, La Opera brings a slice of Parisian flair right into the heart of Mexico City. But don't let the fancy origins fool you—this place has seen its share of action, including a bullet hole in the ceiling courtesy of Pancho Villa himself. Over the years, it's been a hangout for everyone from former president Porfirio Díaz to literary legends like Octavio Paz. Nestled on the gorgeous 5 de Mayo Street, this cantina offers a mix of history, elegance, and a little bit of revolution, all wrapped up in one seriously cool package.
Finally, end your experience on a high note at Salón Tenampa in Plaza Garibaldi. This isn't just any cantina—it's the birthplace of the mariachi tradition in Mexico City's historic center. Opened in 1925, this place is where the magic happens, with mariachi bands filling the air with the sounds of Mexico's musical soul. Step out into the plaza, and you'll be surrounded by the buzz of music, laughter, and maybe a few folks singing along with the band. Want to make the moment even more memorable? You can hire a mariachi band to serenade you with a classic tune or two (for a small fee). It's the perfect way to end your cantina crawl on a high note—literally!
Throughout the experience, your local host will be your guide, your storyteller, and your inside source to all the best-kept secrets of Mexico City's cantina scene.
This is your time to explore, enjoy, and experience Mexico City like a true local—one cantina at a time! Remember to take photos (and slow down on the tequila). ¡Salud!

Ernesto was a great tour guide. He quickly adopted to our needs and interests and was able to accommodate all of our requests. We wanted to see as much as possible and he did not disappoint. We had a private tour for four people and his insights and knowledge of history made this experience for us unique and special. Highly recommend and would gladly take another tour with him again!

Show moreAlejandro was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Mexico City. We began with the history of the city, beginning at ground zero (where the historical, pre-Colombian) beginnings of the city origins. We visited an archeological museum, then Alejandro, went the extra mile to review additional archeological findings around town. Next, we walked through the colonial historical neighborhoods, and markets, all the while getting more architectual knowledge along the way. Alejandro was especially effective in connecting the historial city to its evolution into the modern city we see today, including the historical persons involved. Extremely thorough and comprehensive, I am so much smarter now, then I was this morning, before I went on the tour with Alejandro. Bring comfortable walking shoes - you'll get plenty of steps in!
