Begin your Budapest adventure at the enchanting Varkert Bazar! This neo-Renaissance gem isn't just a feast for the eyes but a cultural hotspot bursting with life. Picture yourself strolling through its meticulously manicured gardens, snapping Instagram-worthy photos. Dive into the underground exhibition spaces where temporary exhibits transport you through Hungary's rich tapestry of history and culture. It's the ultimate blend of art, nature, and panoramic views to kickstart your day.
Next, make your way to the Buda Royal Palace. No need for museum tickets here – the palace grounds are a treasure trove of history and beauty on their own. Wander the expansive courtyards and take in the awe-inspiring architecture. Perched on Castle Hill, the palace offers jaw-dropping views of Budapest, the Danube River, and the bustling cityscape of Pest. Don't forget to capture the grandeur of the statues and monuments dotting the lush gardens.
A short walk away lies the breathtaking Matthias Church. With its colorful tiled roof and stunning Gothic design, this 700-year-old marvel is a sight to behold. Step inside to explore its richly decorated interior, dazzling stained glass windows, and intricate frescoes. This historical gem has hosted countless coronations and royal events, adding to its legendary status.
Just around the corner, the fairy-tale Fisherman's Bastion awaits. Its seven towers symbolize the Hungarian tribes and offer unbeatable panoramic views of the Danube River, Margaret Island, and Pest. Climb to the upper towers for some of the most stunning cityscapes Budapest has to offer. It's a picture-perfect spot that will make your friends back home green with envy.
From there, take a leisurely stroll across the iconic Chain Bridge, the first permanent bridge linking Buda and Pest. As you walk, take in the impressive lion statues and enjoy the sweeping vistas of the Danube River, the Parliament building, Margaret Island and some other bridges. This bridge is a symbol of Budapest's unity and resilience, and it's a must-see for any visitor.
Continue your journey along the Danube Promenade towards the Hungarian Parliament. Along the way, stop at the "Shoes on the Danube Bank" memorial, a poignant tribute to a tragic chapter in history. Your host will share the moving stories behind this memorial, making this stop both powerful and memorable.
Arriving at the Hungarian Parliament, you'll be awestruck by its grandeur. This architectural masterpiece is one of the most stunning parliament buildings in the world. Capture the perfect Budapest shot with the iconic yellow streetcars in the foreground. While you won't be going inside, the exterior is a sight to behold.
Now it's time to refuel with some local delicacies! Head to Retro Langos Budapest for a taste of traditional langos, a scrumptious deep-fried flatbread topped with sour cream and cheese. Follow it up with a sweet treat from Molnars kürtőskalács – a delicious chimney cake coated in sugar and cinnamon. These local delights are a must-try - I always get them!
Wrap up your exploration at the majestic St. Stephen's Basilica, the largest church in Budapest. Marvel at its stunning neoclassical architecture and opulent interior. Climb to the dome for a 360-degree view of the city that's worth every step. Inside, you'll find the mummified right hand of St. Stephen, Hungary's first king, along with a treasury brimming with ecclesiastical treasures.

Balazs was terrific! A wealth of information and very personable. He was patient with our myriad of questions and painted an incredible, easy to understand history of Hungary with a broad brush that ties everything together.

Show moreGreat tour,, tried a wide range of foods and Kristian showed us neighborhoods we wouldn't otherwise have seen.
Show moreWe thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon with Lorinc. He was so knowledgeable about the history of Hungary, and thoroughly engaging throughout our afternoon. He made sure that he provided an experience that we wanted and visited spots and tasted foods that were of the most interest to us in a leisurely and unhurried manner. We would wholeheartedly recommend this experience.
Show moreWe loved our experience in Budapest with Lorinc! We wanted to see parts of the city that we would otherwise miss and he took us to the city park, which was mentioned briefly in our Lonely Planet Guide, so we really would not have considered going. Our kids LOVED the playground there, it really is one of the best playgrounds we've ever been to. And Lorinc was super knowledgeable about the history of Budapest and gave us a lot of context which helped us understand the city much better. It was also super interesting to hear him talk about his life there. We were also so surprised that he spoke fluent Japanese, so we had some chats in Japanese too, so that made us connect with him even more. It was so obvious that see that Lorinc loves Budapest and we really enjoyed spending the morning with him. His recommendations for a secret teahouse and the best restaurant we ate at were priceless! If you visit Budpest, make sure to ask for Lorinc.
