What you’ll do

Budapest is a magical city; from the sights and sounds (and delicious food), there's something for everyone here. So get ready to embark on a magical journey through Budapest, where history, culture, and stunning vistas blend seamlessly into an unforgettable experience. With a local host leading the way, uncover hidden gems and insider stories that make Budapest come alive.

Begin your Budapest adventure at the enchanting Varkert Bazar! This neo-Renaissance gem isn't just a feast for the eyes but a cultural hotspot bursting with life. Picture yourself strolling through its meticulously manicured gardens, snapping Instagram-worthy photos. Dive into the underground exhibition spaces where temporary exhibits transport you through Hungary's rich tapestry of history and culture. It's the ultimate blend of art, nature, and panoramic views to kickstart your day.

Next, make your way to the Buda Royal Palace. No need for museum tickets here – the palace grounds are a treasure trove of history and beauty on their own. Wander the expansive courtyards and take in the awe-inspiring architecture. Perched on Castle Hill, the palace offers jaw-dropping views of Budapest, the Danube River, and the bustling cityscape of Pest. Don't forget to capture the grandeur of the statues and monuments dotting the lush gardens.

A short walk away lies the breathtaking Matthias Church. With its colorful tiled roof and stunning Gothic design, this 700-year-old marvel is a sight to behold. Step inside to explore its richly decorated interior, dazzling stained glass windows, and intricate frescoes. This historical gem has hosted countless coronations and royal events, adding to its legendary status.

Just around the corner, the fairy-tale Fisherman's Bastion awaits. Its seven towers symbolize the Hungarian tribes and offer unbeatable panoramic views of the Danube River, Margaret Island, and Pest. Climb to the upper towers for some of the most stunning cityscapes Budapest has to offer. It's a picture-perfect spot that will make your friends back home green with envy.

From there, take a leisurely stroll across the iconic Chain Bridge, the first permanent bridge linking Buda and Pest. As you walk, take in the impressive lion statues and enjoy the sweeping vistas of the Danube River, the Parliament building, Margaret Island and some other bridges. This bridge is a symbol of Budapest's unity and resilience, and it's a must-see for any visitor.

Continue your journey along the Danube Promenade towards the Hungarian Parliament. Along the way, stop at the "Shoes on the Danube Bank" memorial, a poignant tribute to a tragic chapter in history. Your host will share the moving stories behind this memorial, making this stop both powerful and memorable.

Arriving at the Hungarian Parliament, you'll be awestruck by its grandeur. This architectural masterpiece is one of the most stunning parliament buildings in the world. Capture the perfect Budapest shot with the iconic yellow streetcars in the foreground. While you won't be going inside, the exterior is a sight to behold.

Now it's time to refuel with some local delicacies! Head to Retro Langos Budapest for a taste of traditional langos, a scrumptious deep-fried flatbread topped with sour cream and cheese. Follow it up with a sweet treat from Molnars kürtőskalács – a delicious chimney cake coated in sugar and cinnamon. These local delights are a must-try - I always get them!

Wrap up your exploration at the majestic St. Stephen's Basilica, the largest church in Budapest. Marvel at its stunning neoclassical architecture and opulent interior. Climb to the dome for a 360-degree view of the city that's worth every step. Inside, you'll find the mummified right hand of St. Stephen, Hungary's first king, along with a treasury brimming with ecclesiastical treasures.

This fun-filled, immersive journey through Budapest's highlights, from the Varkert Bazar to St. Stephen's Basilica, offers a whirlwind of history, culture, and breathtaking views. With your local host guiding the way, you'll discover hidden gems and enjoy insider stories that make this experience unforgettable.

This was our first time in Budapest, so we hired a guide for our first full day, deciding to concentrate on the Pest side with a 6hr guided walk..a very good decision as it gave a good orientation of the city and invaluable local knowledge.

This was our first visit to Budapest and although we had swatted up on info from the internet and from our purchased guide book (Marco Polo..concise,very portable and helpful with v good maps) we nevertheless thought it would be money well spent hiring a local host to guide us on our first full day...and so it proved to be. Given we were only in Budapest for a long weekend we did not want to waste time getting lost and walking past points of interest in blissful ignorance! We were also looking to get a good orientation of the city prior to exploring it further on our own...and we did. We concentrated on the Pest side of the city for our 6hrs local host guided walk. We had been in email contact with our host, Richard, prior to the trip and gave him an outline of our WANTS. We spent a most enjoyable 6hrs mostly walking, but also for the experience, riding on a tube and a tram, during which time we were given an excellent introduction to the many sites to see in Pest, many of which we would have missed if not for our host knowledge. Richard spoke excellent English and proved most knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his city and its history and throughout the walk was attentive to our needs, checking if the tour was meeting were expecting, which it more than was. The walk also offered numerous opportunities to talk about varied aspects of living in modern-day Budapest. We would recommend Richard as your local host without hesitation. Chris and Lesley.
