Emperor Hadrian’s holiday home, sprawling estates and colossal architecture in tiny Tivoli.
Here’s everything you need to know before your day unfolds.
Perfectly placed at the foothills of Monti Tiburtini, and skirted by the tranquil Aniene River, it’s not very difficult to see why Tivoli was a favorite holiday destination of Ancient Rome’s elite. Hop on a train with your local Rome host and get whisked away to this whimsical town, where you’ll begin your day with a thorough exploration of Villa d’Este and its sprawling grounds.
Think Opulence and Renaissance glamour. Settle your frazzled senses with a tasty lunch at a local trattoria where you’ll indulge in a three-course meal.
Stroll through the charming town to the bus stop, where your adventure continues to Villa Adriana - which was Emperor Hadrian’s personal little country lock-up-and-go (yes, Hadrian’s wall - that one). And it’s not so much ‘little’ as it is absolutely awe-inspiring.
Lose yourself amongst the olive groves which are dotted with statues and imagine what the palace once looked like as you step inside its ruins and weave between marble pillars - the site is so colossal that it feels more like a town than a single villa!

Ledio made this trip so much more fun! His knowledge of history and the area was great. The conversation was fun and interesting. But most important to me… I’m legally blind and require a bit more assistance managing crowds, stairs, darker spaces. It’s always a bit more difficult with new places and with new people. Walking around with Ledio was like walking around with my son who has been helping me for 20 years. Ledio immediately picked up on cues of a sighted guide and made me feel so at ease. When I’m in an unfamiliar space, I tend to look down more to make sure I don’t trip. But w Ledio I was able to actuallly look up and enjoy the streets of Tivoli and the mind blowing beauty of Villa d’este. Also, I just wanted to say… I booked this 8 hour tourthe day before. I was a bit concerned that maybe I would get a guide that wasn’t too good or unprepared. Kudos to city unscripted for providing excellent quality even on last minute requests. My only suggestion…. I randomly picked a tour time of 10:00. when I arrived at the meeting point, the next train to Tivoli was not until 11:00. It was not a big deal. We had coffee and chatted while waiting an hour for the next train. That said, I would suggest having the guide check train times in advance and asking for example if a client can arrive a little earlier to catch a 10:00 train or change the meeting time to say 10:45 to catch the 11 train. But this was minor for me and overall I had the most fantastic time. Thank you!!
Show moreThere is so much to see that internet searches can't reveal. We very much enjoyed our walking tour of Rome with a local guide. We filled out a questionnaire before-hand, which helped shape the tour to best fit our interests, capabilities & limitations (being an "aging couple"). Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly & helpful. She showed us things we never could have found on our own. I even "upgraded" my straw hat to a real one from a company making them since the mid 1800's! From pictures to purchases to palate, it was well worth the extra cost for a private tour. Group tours are adequate, but this was specifically tailored to our interests & capabilities.
