Do you know the most beautiful churches in Paris? Hidden, unusual, or exceptional churches? Some of them have incredible architecture and unique history in addition to many works of art and treasures. We will take you on a journey of history, architecture, and spirituality
We know Paris thanks to the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the Montmartre, but how many of you have found time to visit the beautiful churches, silent witnesses of a rich and stormy history? When you enter these sanctuaries, a calm, almost timeless atmosphere surrounds you and you can discover not only breathtaking architecture but also unsuspected artistic and spiritual treasures.
Paris is not only the capital of fashion, it is also the ecclesiastical center of France. Perhaps all the religions of the world have their temple in the city, we can find Catholic, Protestant, Lutheran, Orthodox, Jewish, and Muslim shrines here, and the French Reformists, American and German Protestants, Seventh-day Adventists, Mormons, or the Armenian Church are also represented here.
The most numerous number of church buildings, the Catholic Church is represented in Paris. There are more than 120 churches in the city. Among the most famous are Notre Dame Cathedral, Sacré Coeur Basilica, and churches such as Saint-Sulpice, La Madeleine, Saint-Eustache or Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
The churches of Paris are one of the important tourist attractions that the French capital offers us. Since the Middle Ages, countless buildings and places of worship have been built throughout the city, often linked to ancient French royal families. All of these impressive buildings are testimony to different architectural styles, as well as images of a multitude of historical events that have taken place in Paris and the rest of French territory.
The best-known and most visited, the Notre Dame Cathedral belongs to the State, and according to the law of separation of Church and State, the 75 churches and chapels built in the 20th century belong mainly to the Church.
The Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral is located on the Île de la Cité, in the historic center of Paris.
If you are interested in history, and architecture, or if you are Catholic, this place will impress you more than any other monument you have visited before. Construction began in 1160 and the Cathedral we see today is largely as it was when it was completed seven centuries ago. This magnificent cathedral took almost 200 years to complete, finishing around 1245.
The Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral is the most famous of the Paris churches for good reason: it was a direct witness to all the historical events that took place in Paris from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its beautiful architecture is very representative of the Gothic style.
The cathedral was built with three levels to represent Heaven, Earth, and Limbo, but unfortunately it can no longer be visited due to the sad and unfortunate fire that almost completely destroyed its entire interior in 2019.
We will have to wait until December 2024, the approximate date of the possible completion of the reconstruction of the burned part of the cathedral. At the moment there is no other solution than to visit it from the outside since luckily its strong walls and external decorations were not hit by the fire. The churches of Paris provide a different and unusual way to explore the history of this beautiful city.
