What travelers think of our Taipei experiences

Not only did we explore a night market, but we visited a couple of Taoist temples and explained the rituals and belief systems associated with them. Also, she was flexible about the itinerary; she did not make me repeat a market I had already seen.

Our night market food tour with Green was a highlight of our trip to Taipei! He was accommodating of our wishes, and extremely knowledgeable. He gave us tremendous insights into Taiwanese culture. A tour like this would not have been possible on our own. We did not see another Western tourist during the entire evening! The food was interesting, and delicious. Highly recommended!

Green was a good tour guide. We wanted more of a food tour, but were happy to visit Ximen district which is very dynamic and exciting.

We loved the food tour at the night markets. We visited two markets - one smaller and one larger. It was a great way to get a sense of the culture and taste amazing food. Our guide Charlotte was great - she took us to the best food stalls, provided background on the places and food, and made the tour fun and relaxed. She was flexible to accommodate our interests and very generous with her time. We definitely recommend this tour!

What you’ll do

You won’t find hordes of tourists at Yansan Night Market, nor will you see elaborate cook-offs with flaming pans or peruse expensive bric-a-brac stalls. No, this market is an authentic, modest local hang-out, which will be perfect for you if you’re keen to get a no-frills feel for Taipei’s food scene.

Let your local Taipei host lead you there, where you’ll sample wonderful delicacies not found anywhere else in the city. Three musts at Yansan Market are fried noodles, gua bao (steamed buns stuffed with pork belly), and mochi ice. Absolutely transcendent stuff!

Absorb the low-key atmosphere as you people-watch, seeing locals pull up on scooters after work to grab a quick bite, or relax on verandas with their friends. Your host will take you to the very best vendors and explain any ingredients you may be unfamiliar with, helping you to get a true taste of local life in Taipei.

From stinky tofu to youyu geng (a thick squid soup), Yansan is about as real as it gets, and being the avid explorer (not tourist) that you are, we know you’ll love it!
