What you’ll do

Welcome to Lisbon, and get ready to explore some of my favorite spots with a host who will show you some hidden gems along the way. Are you ready? Let's dive in!

Imagine kicking off your experience in Lisbon with the city's most iconic treat—the irresistible pastel de nata. But this isn't just any old snack stop; it's a delicious dive into Lisbon's rich culture, guided by a local who knows all the ins and outs of this incredible city. Your adventure kicks off at Praça Luís de Camões, a lively square where locals gather. Your host will greet you with a delicious pastel de nata, a local delicacy that's sure to delight your taste buds.

This is where the magic happens. With the sun casting a golden glow over the square, you'll bite into your pastel de nata while your host spills the beans (or custard, in this case) on the history behind these sweet treats. You'll hear the tale of how these creamy delights were born in a monastery and how they evolved into the beloved pastries you're enjoying today. As you savor the caramelized top and creamy center, your host will also fill you in on why Praça Luís de Camões is such a beloved spot among locals—it's a place where history, culture, and everyday Lisbon life collide in the best way possible.

Next up, it's time to hop on the charming Tram 24, a classic Lisbon experience that's as fun as it is functional. As you rattle along the tracks, you'll feel like you're being transported back in time. Your destination? Rua Escola Politécnica, where the pace slows down just a notch. Here, in the beautiful Jardim do Príncipe Real, it's time to indulge in another Lisbon staple—a bica, the city's signature espresso. But this isn't just any coffee break; you'll be grabbing your bica from a traditional kiosk, a quintessential Lisbon experience that's as authentic as it gets. Picture yourself sitting on a park bench, surrounded by leafy trees and elegant 19th-century mansions, sipping on that rich, dark espresso while your host shares the lowdown on why these kiosks are so special to Portuguese culture.

Fully caffeinated and ready for more, you'll wander over to the Convento de São Pedro de Alcântara, a hidden gem that's steeped in history and draped in stunning blue-and-white azulejos (that's Portuguese for those gorgeous tiles). This 17th-century convent is like a slice of Lisbon's soul, and your host will guide you through its fascinating story, pointing out the intricate details that make this place so special.

Just a stone's throw away, you'll find the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, one of the city's best-kept secrets. The view from here? Absolutely jaw-dropping. You'll take in a sweeping panorama of Lisbon, complete with terracotta rooftops, the majestic São Jorge Castle, and the sparkling Tagus River. It's the perfect spot to snap some envy-inducing photos, enjoy the sounds of local musicians, and maybe even grab another bica from a nearby kiosk—because when in Lisbon, right?

The adventure continues as you head to A Brasileira Café, a true Lisbon institution. Opened in 1905, this café has been the go-to hangout for artists, intellectuals, and revolutionaries for over a century. Your host will dish out the scoop on its fascinating history, including how it helped turn coffee from a foreign novelty into a beloved Portuguese staple. You'll sip your coffee surrounded by history, art, and the spirit of legendary poet Fernando Pessoa, whose bronze statue now greets visitors at the door.

No trip to Lisbon would be complete without a visit to the hauntingly beautiful ruins of the Carmo Convent. This Gothic masterpiece was nearly destroyed in the devastating 1755 earthquake, but its arches still stand tall, offering a glimpse into the city's resilient past. As you explore these ancient ruins, your host will share tales of the convent's history, including its transformation into an archaeological treasure trove.

Before wrapping up your experience, you'll make a quick detour to the Santa Justa Lift, an engineering marvel that offers some of the best views in the city. Thanks to your host's insider knowledge, you'll skip the line and head straight to the top via a secret entrance. From the top, you can soak in a 360-degree view of Lisbon's vibrant neighborhoods before riding the lift down in style.

Finally, you'll end your adventure at the grand Praça do Comércio, Lisbon's most iconic square. As you stand in this expansive plaza with the Tagus River glistening before you, your host will recount the dramatic history that unfolded here—from royal arrivals to revolutionary uprisings. You'll take in the impressive statue of King José I, the stunning Arco da Rua Augusta, and the stories that make this square a symbol of Lisbon's strength and spirit.
