In Naples, a city known for its ancient history, spectacular cuisine and, of course, the iconic Mount Vesuvius, your local host will lead you off the well-trodden tourist trail to the city’s secret network of staircases leading to parts of Naples your guidebook doesn’t even know about. From the hilltop district of Vomero, walk to the top of Petraio stairs – a tranquil staircase leading from Vomero to Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Pass between 19th-century houses overgrown with wild plants, stopping off at a terrace for a stunning view, and see a few of the city’s famous votive altars as you make your way down the stairs and head towards the Santa Maria in Portico, a late-baroque church just off the seaside promenade leading to Egg Castle – the oldest castle in Naples.
