Shaan was absolutely incredible. I am actually a very meticulous trip planner who hates going on tours. The "peppy coca cola sweet American cheerleader tour guide experience is my worst nightmare. However, I had an unexpected layover in Japan and thus arrived in Osaka/Kyoto with no plans, no research, no knowledge. To get myself around I booked a small tour at the last minute for my first day and ended up with Shaan. Shaan's style is not one of "tourism" but rather felt like walking with a old friend through the streets of Kyoto. A truly relaxing and lovely (and informative) experience, very suitable for the quiet and gentle atmosphere of Kyoto. I very much enjoyed her company and also her thoughtfulness. Even though she was my tour guide for two hours on the first day, she sent me an email with an itinerary for my remaining time in Kyoto that gave me a truly magical and local experience. She also lent me a jacket as I had not packed for March

We had a lovely day exploring Kyoto with our wonderful guide, Ada. We visited Gion and Shirakawa Canal, Yasaka Shrine, Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka and Kiyomizu-dera. Ada was delightful to be with and very knowledgeable about Japan, Kyoto and the sites we visited. We all appreciated her warm and friendly personality, and she was happy to move at a comfortable pace to accommodate my mother, which was really appreciated.

Pam was a well-spoken, bright, knowledgeable guide who met us right at the train station to begin our walking tour. Because it was a personalized tour, she led us through the beautiful historic streets and temples with a wealth of information. She was patient with our group as we stopped to shop, and then walked us to the market across town. One couldn't ask for a better day!

FAQs

Your questions, answered

Is this a traditional tour or something different?

This isn’t a traditional tour with a fixed script. It’s a fully personalized day shaped around your interests, whether it’s culture, history, neighborhoods, or hidden local spots. Your host is a knowledgeable local, more like a friend showing you their city. It’s flexible, one-on-one, and tailored entirely to you.

How does personalization work?

After booking, you’ll receive a short questionnaire where you can share your interests, travel style, and any must-see spots. Based on that, we’ll match you with a local host who’ll reach out to plan your personalized itinerary..

Will I see famous landmarks or just hidden gems?

Both! Your host will take you to iconic sights if you want to see them, but they’ll also introduce you to places and stories most travelers miss.

What if I don’t know what I want to explore?

That’s completely fine! Select an experience theme or a flexible discovery experience, and after booking, answer a few questions so your host can design the perfect experience for you.

What makes City Unscripted different?

We don’t do generic tours. Every experience is crafted around you, ensuring a unique, personal, and authentic way to explore the city. You won’t just see the sights—you’ll connect with the people and stories that bring the city to life.

Will I know my itinerary in advance?

Yes, you will have the opportunity to chat with your host directly and agree on a plan for the day. However, there’s always room for spontaneity and local surprises!

Can I adjust the plan on the day?

Absolutely. Your host can adjust the itinerary on the day based on your pace, energy, or any new ideas you have. It’s a flexible experience from start to finish.

Will we enter attractions, or just explore from the outside?

That’s up to you! Some experiences include visits inside attractions, while others focus on the city's culture and atmosphere, which can be hard to truly experience without someone who knows the city inside out.

What kind of stories and insights will my host share?

Each host has their own personal relationship with the city. You'll experience the city through their eyes—hearing stories about places they love, discovering hidden gems, and learning what makes their city special in a way that goes beyond a typical tour.

How much walking is involved?

This depends on the experience, but your host can adjust the pace to suit your comfort level.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Your experience will still go ahead, and your host will adapt the day to suit the conditions. One of the great things about City Unscripted is that no two experiences are the same, and your host knows the city well enough to find great “rainy day” alternatives.
