I had a wonderful day visiting Kamakura with Ack. It was great to get out of the city & I would definitely recommend Kamakura as a destination as it was a lot more relaxed than Tokyo. Ack was a great host providing lots of information & making the day very easy and relaxing for me.

I spent my first full day in Tokyo with Noah - he was fantastic at introducing me to the city from helping me sort out a railcard and understand the metro map to taking me around a few key sights in an informative and relaxed way. Definitely recommend if it is your first time to Tokyo and want a little local help to start so you aren’t too overwhelmed!

A super tour, with a good mix of culture and street food/market. Austen was a great guide who speaks excellent English, guided us competently, and helped us with shopping. It was a great introduction to/in Kyoto that we never could have achieved on our own with just "onboard resources".

I was skeptical at first as I had already walked around and seen a few sights but the inside knowledge of Kanazawa along with many experiences you cannot do yourself. I would not hesitate to book this type of experience in any city I went to. Kanazawa is a favourite after going to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

FAQs

Your questions, answered

Is this a traditional tour or something different?

This isn’t a typical food tour with set stops. Instead, it’s a casual, personalized food experience led by a local who knows where the best bites are—whether it’s tiny noodle joints, late-night izakayas, or tucked-away street snacks. You’ll discover local favorites, try what excites you, and enjoy a flexible route tailored to your tastes, all at your own pace.

How does the personalization process work?

Once you’ve booked, we’ll send you a quick questionnaire to learn more about your tastes, dietary needs, and food preferences. Your local host will then get in touch to shape a food journey that matches your tastes.

Will I know my itinerary in advance?

Yes, you will have the opportunity to chat with your host directly and agree on a plan for the day. However, there’s always room for spontaneity and local surprises!

Can I adjust the plan on the day?

Absolutely. Your host can adjust the itinerary on the day based on your pace, energy, or any new ideas you have. It’s a flexible experience from start to finish.

How do you ensure food safety and hygiene?

All hosts are locals who know where to find safe, high-quality food. They avoid places with poor standards and focus on trusted spots they know well—so you can feel confident about every stop.

Can my host accommodate dietary restrictions or preferences?

Yes! When you book, you’ll fill out a short questionnaire where you can note any dietary needs or preferences. Your host will plan the experience accordingly to make sure everything suits you.

What if a restaurant or food stall is unexpectedly closed?

It’s unlikely, as our hosts usually check opening times in advance. But if a restaurant or food stall is unexpectedly closed, your host will have backup options ready and adjust the plan on the spot. The experience is flexible, so you’ll still enjoy a great selection of local spots.

Can I request specific foods or places to eat?

Absolutely. If there are dishes you’re eager to try or areas you'd like to explore, just let us know in the questionnaire. Your host will use your input to shape a personalized food journey.

Do you use fixed restaurant stops or is it flexible?

There’s no fixed route—your host will tailor the stops based on your tastes and what’s best on the day. Some places may be planned in advance, but there's room to adapt the experience as you go.

What happens in case of bad weather?

Rain won’t stop your experience—your host will adjust the route if needed, choosing cozy indoor spots or covered food areas. City Unscripted experiences are flexible by design, and your host will make sure it’s just as enjoyable, whatever the weather.

Can I change the meeting place?

Yes, you will be in touch with your host before your experience, and you can agree on a different meeting point with them. Your host can meet you anywhere central that’s convenient.

Can my host meet me at my accommodation?

Hotel meet-ups are available upon request in central areas. If you're staying outside the city, your host will recommend the best meeting spot and guide you with directions.
