You’ll join one of our Rome hosts for a food crawl around historic Testaccio, an edgy neighborhood that reads like a grid of old-school trattorias and hip street food joints (hopefully whilst wearing your stretchiest trousers).
You’ll eat your way around the district where the Cucina Romana was born - since after all, the best way to discover a new culture is through its food.
You’ll feast on the hyper-local and seasonal dishes which Rome is famous for, from street eats like supplì, a fried rice-ball with a tomato sauce and a heart of gooey melting mozzarella to panino con porchetta - an aromatic combo of crusty bread, fresh herbs and succulent juicy pork at the Testaccio Market.
You’ll discover regional and seasonal produce while you’re here too, like globe artichokes and porcini mushrooms. It goes without saying you’ll also try some pizza romana (your host will make sure you don’t mix this staple up with its cousin, pizza napolitana) and the local speciality pizza bianca.
Add into the mix a visit to a trattoria for the Roman speciality, carciofi alla giudia (Jewish style fried artichokes), followed by a dish of cacio e pepe, literally “cheese and pepper” (a minimalist Roman pasta dish consisting of locally produced Pecorino Romano and black pepper) and you’re a) eating like a Roman and b) possibly so full you can’t move.
But there’s always room for dessert - did someone say gelato?
Join a food-loving host (pretty much everyone in Rome is food-loving) and discover Rome's vibrant food scene
Explore the Testaccio neighbourhood where the “Cucina Romana” originates and soak up the culinary culture and history - by eating it!

We had a great walking tour of Rome with Gerry. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and spoke very understandable English. He determined the sites to visit as we didn't have anything special we wanted to see. He took us to very outstanding places and we saw things that we hadn't seen during our previous 2 days of touring Rome. I highly recommend using him as a guide to the city.
Gerry found an expert sommelier Umberto, with his own "enoteca" loaded with hundreds of bottles of wine. We were given 3 white and 3 red wines to try with nibbles and masses of background info. On the grape, the method and the bottlers. Umberto was very informative and our day was enjoyable.
As a solo traveller, I booked quite a few tours through City Unscripted not knowing quite what to expect. I had an amazing time on all my tours. In Rome, I met Varshit, not born in Rome but had lived there for 18 months. Varshit messaged me a few days in advance on Whatsapp letting me know where we were meeting and what he had planned. It all went perfectly - we met at a cafe for a quick espresso hit and then headed out into the city. It was actually wonderful to have Varshit who knew about the history and the local area, but could also talk to me about what it was like to be in Rome as a foreigner. Being on my own, Varshit and I covered so much territory. Even better, Varshit brought his GoPro and took heaps of photos of me in all the main attractions and then sent them to me on Google Drive. A perfect trip!
Just because it’s not here doesn’t mean we can’t offer it.
