Delia’s knowledge, attitude and service made the difference. I strongly recommend herGustavo, London, 2025
One of my favorite things about London is that it still surprises me with birds.
I know that sounds like an odd thing to say about a city famous for royal palaces, historic landmarks, and some of the busiest streets in the world. But after years of living here, I have found that the moments I treasure most are often the ones people are least expecting.
Delia in a quiet green corner of London
A flash of green overhead as a parakeet darts between the trees.
The sight of a peregrine falcon circling above St Paul's Cathedral.
The sudden realization that birdsong has become louder than the traffic around you.
Those are the moments that make me stop.
When I first moved to London from rural Norfolk, I arrived with the same expectations many visitors have. I was excited by the history, the famous buildings, and the places I had heard about for years. London felt vast compared to where I grew up, and there was something thrilling about being surrounded by so much activity.
Find Space To Slow Down In London
Explore beyond the rush of the city and discover London's quieter corners, local stories, hidden details, and famous sights at a pace that feels right for you.
What I didn't expect was how much I would come to appreciate the quieter side of the city.
Over time, I began paying attention to the things happening around the landmarks rather than only looking at them. A hidden square tucked behind a busy road. A mural telling the story of someone who once lived in the neighborhood. The way a park changes from one season to the next. The details that reveal themselves when you stop trying to get somewhere and simply look around.
That habit has changed the way I experience London.
It is also the reason I love sharing it as a host in London.
Guests enjoying a spring day near Buckingham Palace
Spring is when I notice it most. The city seems to take a deep breath. Blossom appears above pavements that looked bare only weeks before. Fresh leaves soften streets that have spent months under gray skies. Bluebells spread beneath trees in pockets of woodland that feel surprisingly far from the city around them.
People often arrive expecting London to be all energy and momentum. They are surprised to discover how much space there is to slow down.
I think London is better than people imagine at giving you that choice.
London Feels Different When You Slow Down
The city is more than its landmarks. Wander through quiet squares, discover local stories, and explore at a pace that leaves room for unexpected moments, personal connections, and discoveries of your own.
See Private London ExperiencesYou can spend the morning exploring somewhere full of history, then find yourself sitting beneath a tree listening to birds in the afternoon. You can walk through busy streets and turn a corner into complete calm. That contrast is one of the things I love most about living here.
It is also something I try to help guests experience for themselves.
One guest in particular comes to mind.
Delia with guests on a London street
She was traveling alone and admitted she felt nervous about London. The city seemed enormous. The Tube felt complicated. Even deciding where to go next felt intimidating. I remember how carefully she approached everything at the beginning of the day, worried about making mistakes or getting lost.
As we explored together, something gradually changed.
The questions became less about what could go wrong and more about what she might like to do next. She started reading maps differently. She became more comfortable making decisions. The city stopped feeling like a challenge she needed to overcome and started feeling like somewhere she could enjoy.
A few days later, she sent me a message.
She had gone to the theater by herself. She had taken herself out for dinner. She had spent her evenings exploring parts of London she would have avoided when she first arrived.
I still think about that message.
Not because she had seen more landmarks or covered more ground, but because she had gained something far more valuable. She had found confidence.
For me, that is what travel is often about. Not collecting places but becoming comfortable enough to connect with them.
Perhaps that is why I still love London after all these years.
It is a city that rewards curiosity. The more attention you give it, the more it gives back. Sometimes that comes in the form of history. Sometimes it is a conversation, a mural, or a story hidden in plain sight. Sometimes it is simply looking up and spotting a falcon soaring above one of the most famous buildings in the country.
Even now, I find myself doing exactly that.
I still pause when I hear Big Ben striking the hour across Westminster. I still look for parakeets in the trees. I still get excited when I discover a detail I have somehow missed before.
Those moments remind me that London is not only a city of famous sights.
It is a city of small discoveries.
And often, those are the ones that stay with you longest.
That is the London I love sharing. Not the version that rushes past your window, but the one you begin to notice when you slow down: the birds above the rooftops, the bluebells after winter, the quiet corners, and the confidence that comes from realizing the city has made room for you.
