In Bavaria beer isn’t considered a drink, but basic food - liquid bread as locals like to say. Many locals drink beer in Munich on a daily basis, even in the mornings! I have lived in this beer-loving city for 3 years and toured all of the best beer halls in Munich. Here is a compilation of the very best places to drink beer in Munich, so you can skip the tourist traps and discover the hidden gems this city has to offer.
Trumpf Oder Kritisch
Visiting a traditional German bar is a great way to kick-start your trip and Trumpf Oder Kritisch is definitely one of the best bars in Munich. Found just west of the beautiful English Garten Park (one of Munich’s must-sees), this bar is cosy and laidback; it’s the perfect place to relax after a stroll around the centre. Serving some of the best beer in Munich, it is the atmosphere of this place that really makes it. With simple benches inside and outside, there is always an air of celebration and happiness; the Munich locals are always toasting each other. The staff here know their beer well, so don’t be afraid to ask for a recommendation; they’ll find your perfect pint in no time!
Hofbräuhaus
There is a reason why many people recommend visitors to go to the Hofbräuhaus beer hall. The oldest beer hall in Munich, this place is always super crowded with a really fun atmosphere. Built almost 500 years ago, the building has some amazing architecture and the ceilings are bright and ornate. There are rows and rows of benches where you can have a beer with friends; the feeling is really upbeat. There is even a band on the first floor who play traditional folk music to help you get into the Munich spirit. Hofbräuhaus beer is traditional and an absolute must-try while in the city. You may want to skip the food here; there are plenty of other places in the city to sample our Bavarian delicacies. Stick to the beer and a pretzel as you marvel at this historic venue, the best beer hall in Munich.
Der Pschorr
Der Pschorr at Viktualienmarket is another one of the top beer halls in Munich and is relatively new to the beer scene. I think this one is well worth checking out. The room is really bright and airy and has a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. Its location at Viktualienmarket is ideal for a lunch in-between museum visits, or as a cool way to round up your busy day. In the summer time they have a really nice beer garden where you can relax in the sun after a day sightseeing in the centre. I love Der Pschorr for its selection of fresh, chilled, tapped Bavarian beers; there is something for everyone here.
Augustiner-Keller
Augustiner-Keller at Arnulfstrasse is definitely the best beer keller in Munich. The long brick tunnel glows in the candlelight, and the kegs and traditional benches give this place a really authentic feel. As well as a huge variety of Bavarian beer on tap, Augustiner-Keller has a really varied restaurant menu including a lot of the local must-try specialties. They brew their own beer here and you can drink it straight from the keg, it’s refreshing and one of my personal favourite beers of choice. This is a great place to come for a relaxed meal with friends or family. The food is delicious and there is always a really chilled-out vibe; this is one of my favourite places to drink beer in Munich.
Weisn (Octoberfest)
Oktoberfest Munich is the number one place to try beer in the city. Locally known as Weisn, this huge event takes place during the last 2 weeks of September and attracts over 6 million visitors each year. Contrary to popular belief, this is a family friendly celebration where people of all ages can enjoy themselves. There are lots of amusement park rides and beer gardens where families can celebrate together and teenagers over the age 16 are legally allowed to drink beer. If you are one of the stranger types who doesn’t like beer (just kidding!) there is also wine available at many stalls. While you’re here, be sure to have enough cash with you to avoid disappointment as cards are not accepted by vendors. The local experience of Oktoberfest Munich is enjoying a Bavarian beer and celebrating with your nearest and dearest.
Starkbierfest
Starkbierfest (The Strong Beer Festival) is another massive Munich beer festival and is considered the “fifth season” by locals. Every year between Carnival and Easter, many breweries and beer halls in Munich release special edition beers that are darker and stronger than usual just for this event. Held usually at the Paulaner Hall, up to 5000 people can celebrate in here at once! Like Oktoberfest, this event is all about celebrating beer and togetherness; it’s such a fun atmosphere! As Starkbierfest is one of the lesser known Munich beer festivals, you really get the local experience here. This is a great opportunity to try alternatives to the traditional types and some of the best beer in Munich.
Christkindlesmarket
Christkindlesmarket becomes one of the best beer halls in Munich’s winter. Like all German Christmas markets, the ones in Munich are big and jolly with so much going on. There are different markets which take place in many quarters throughout the city; stalls sell arts and crafts, as well as seasonal German food and beverages. One of my favourites is The Pink Christmas Market in Stephansplatz: a friendly, inclusive and fun market in the LGBTQ neighbourhood. You can reach this one using Underground line U2 to Sendlinger Tor. Another great one to visit is Schwabing Christmas Market, an artsy market with music, good food and talented vendors ( follow line U6 to Münchner Freiheit). With local music, food and entertainment, the Christmas markets are definitely one of the best places to drink beer in Munich.
Giesinger Bräustüberl
Giesinger is another famous beer hall in Munich, and it’s not hard to see why. One of the best small local beer brands in Munich; this place offers a large variety of craft beers brewed on-site. With all modern décor, this beer hall has an airy and fresh feel to it and always has a nice atmosphere. As beer halls are a big part of Munich nightlife, lots of locals like to come in here for a couple of drinks before heading to the city’s clubs. With excellent craft beers and tasty food, Geisinger is a great place for all occasions.
Tap-House
The Tap-House is definitely one of the best beer bars in Munich. This paradise for beer-lovers offers over 200 bottled beers and 42 on tap! Well-loved by locals and tourists alike, The Tap-House have beers from all over the world; you are guaranteed to find a favourite in here. Skip the food, the treasure is really the beer experience. With an award-winning selection, this is a great place to come towards the end of your Munich beer tour, when you have tried the local favourites and are looking for something to match your exact tastes. Located near Munich Ost station, visiting here will give you a more local experience of the city as you travel towards suburbia.
Airbräu
Another one of the best places to drink beer in Munich is actually at our airport! Not many people know about this place but Airbräu is the international airport’s own brewery. With their large selection of Bavarian craft beer, this is a great place to kill time before your departure with Munich’s finest. I have tried a different part of their selection each time I’ve gone on holiday and they are really good. Whether you want your first taste of the city, or a perfect way to round up your beer tour, Airbräu is a brilliant place to relax with a nice cold drink.
