What you’ll do

Take a step back in time (figuratively, of course) and visit a small slice of Edo era Japan, also known as the ancient castle town of Kawagoe. You’ll spend the day with one of our friendly hosts, strolling among the 17th century wooden buildings and charcoal-tiled houses of the kurazukuri (warehouse) district. Marvel at the Toki no Kane Tower, or stop by the Festival Museum for a glimpse at the three story floats that parade the streets once a year. As amble through the quaint streets, absorb the Edo-period ambiance, unique buildings, artsy galleries and find plenty of places to call in for a drink or bite to eat. From the Hattori Museum of Folklore and the Kawagoe Castle, to soya shops and Penny Candy Lane (for those of us with a sweet tooth, this is just heaven). If you’re feeling especially brave and feudal, perhaps try some boiled eel - this is an Edo-era delicacy as the eating of meat was forbidden. Round off your day with a visit to the Hikawa Shrine. Here you can write your heart’s desires on a wooden plaque and tie it to the temple for the deities that reside there to consider (even if your heart’s desire is never to eat boiled eel again!)

Our Picks

  • Join a host and immerse yourself in Edo-era Japanese heritage - from the architecture to the food

  • Shop for handmade wares, local crafts, souvenirs and unique foods as you stroll around the quaint streets

  • Allow your host to lead you off the beaten tourist track and search for hidden gems together

  • Visit famous sites like the Toki no Kane Tower and Honmaru Goten Castle

  • Sample local delicacies like boiled eel, and maybe even like them!

  • Go to the Hikawa Shrine and write a note to one of the deities on a wooden plaque

  • Chat to your host and learn more about the Edo period and Kawagoe’s instrumental part in securing Edo’s (Tokyo’s old name) trading success
