Make the most of your time in Sapporo during the Rugby World Cup by exploring its top sights and discovering its staggering food scene! How do you cram it all in? Simple - with one of our local Sapporo hosts who will meet up with you before the game to show you the must-sees, before leading you to the stadium for the game. Afterwards, embark upon your next adventure - eating the best local food!
The Japan Rugby World Cup 2019 is about to kick off and rugby fever has swept across Sapporo. The best part? You are going to be a part of it - you lucky thing. There will be two extremely exciting games played at the Sapporo Dome, but you’ve come all this way, so of course you’ll want to explore the city and discover its culture too!
But how can you squeeze in sightseeing, the game and getting to know the city’s food scene - eating exactly like a local - all in one day?! With one of our local Sapporo hosts! They’ll meet up with you before the game so you can do some exploring and see Sapporo’s famous attractions, take you to the Dome in time for your match, then meet up with you again afterwards for round 2: food!
Your local Sapporo host will show you to famous sites like Hokkaidō Shrine, which is said to enshrine four kami (divine beings) including that of the Emperor Meiji, and throw in a bit of a local twist by taking you to a lesser known local spot like a three-story building near the Nijo fish market, where the creatives like to hang out. Here you will find the Clark Gallery & Shift, an artistic space where you will find local artists exhibiting their work.
The city might be young, but it’s certainly not lacking in history and culture. From phenomenal parks like Nakajima Park, Japanese gardens and the gateway to Hokkaidō’s mountains and hot springs, there’s so much to explore.
But Sapporo is just as proud of its brewing heritage, so the Sapporo Beer Museum is as much of an icon as the ski jump! Here you can learn about the detailed history of beer production and the processes behind it, as well as having the option of a tasting session at the end.
With kick-off approaching, your host will then lead you to the gates of Sapporo Dome so that you can watch the game. Your local Sapporo host will meet you at the stadium right after the game to hit the streets and eat your way around a neighborhood renowned for its food scene. You could start in Odori, where street food reigns, or Susukino, which comes to life under the neon-lights after dark.
From Hokkaido’s regional miso ramen (always yummier with a plate of gyoza on the side) which you have to try in Ramen Alley, to treats which may surprise you like soft serve ice-cream and Hokkaido cheese, you’ll discover how, what and where the locals eat.
Slurp soup curry (it’s good manners, don’t worry), a dish that was born here, try kaisen don, a bowl of fresh, raw seafood on a bed of fluffy white rice and even set free your inner chef (we know you’ve got one) as you grill your own meat on a convex skillet at a classic Jingisukan BBQ restaurant - this is the ultimate soul food!
Then there’s the matter of sake, which the Hokkaido region is famous for and is said to cleanse the palette. You can sample different varieties of sake, served at different temperatures and of different ages at unique sake shops or izakaya, which actually means “stay in sake shop”. And let’s not forget about the famous Premium Sapporo Beer! You could head for the Sapporo Garden Park, a “beer town” made up of heritage red brick buildings or which has its own beer garden, or maybe you’d prefer to stick to the smaller izakaya and tachinomiya bars, where you’ll be rubbing shoulders with the locals and saying “kanpai!” (cheers!) with new friends in no time.

Had a great day with Robin, my wife and kids enjoyed his company and his ability to show us around the agreed sites. Highly recommend Robin for families visiting the area. He communicated great and the whole experience from booking to the days activities were spot on. Will definitely see him again on our return
A very pleasant morning with a courteous and helpful guide
Robinn asked our preference ofvthe places to see and actually followed our suggestions. Was glad to have explored the city using their public transport. Would have been better if Robinn shared info and facts about the places we visted though. But appreciated that he brought us to this amazing soup curry resto-Garaku! Got hooked to soup curry!
