What you'll do

Make the most of your time in Fukuoka during the Japan Rugby World Cup by exploring its top sights and discovering its staggering food scene! How do you cram it all in? Simple - with one of our local Fukuoka hosts who will meet up with you before the game to show you the must-sees, before leading you to the stadium for the game. Afterward, embark upon your next adventure - eating the best local food!

Fukuoka is the place to be this September when the Rugby World Cup 2019 rolls into town. Fukuoka Hakatanomori Stadium will play host to three exciting games and, if you are hoping to catch a few other matches during your stay, the city offers an amazing starting point to explore the rest of the island as the Kumamoto Athletic Stadium and the Oita Stadium will also be hosting some of the World Cup matches.

You must be getting excited as the international event looms, and with tickets booked it is time to focus on the next two important things- sightseeing and food! How about combining it all into one epic adventure? How is that even possible?! With one of our local Fukuoka hosts

They’ll meet up with you before the game so you can explore this historic port city together, discovering famous attractions like Ohori Park, Kushida Shrine and Fukuoka Castle. But this really is a tale of two cities - along the way you’ll learn how Fukuoka was born of two cities, and stop by historic sites like the Sumiyoshi-jinja Shrine, which is dedicated to protecting sailors and the Shōfuku-ji Temple - the oldest Zen temple in Japan.

Your host can’t wait to share their favorite spots with you; and of course, they want to give you a glimpse into local life, which is why they will also take you to a few lesser-known spots that don't feature in the guidebooks - like Kirin Beer Park, one of only four local breweries in Kyushu, where you can taste some of the best craft beer in Fukuoka.

But now it’s time to head off to the stadium. We don't want you to miss kick-off so your host will take you right up to the gates, and make sure you get there on time. We hope your team wins, but regardless of the results, things are about to get exciting as you get ready for round 2 of your adventure: food!

Your host will meet up with you again at the stadium right after the game to lead you on a culinary adventure through the city. Perhaps the first stop could be the nearest yatai? Unique to Fukuoka, these tiny, movable street food carts open into little pop-up restaurants and are known to serve the best street eats around.

Of course, you’ll try Hakata ramen (silky pork bone broth and thin noodles) - we’re not 100% certain, but it might actually be illegal not to sample the city’s most famous dish while you’re here. We also recommend you take a dip into the seafood whilst here. The Genkai Sea, which hugs Hakata Bay, is teeming with mackerel and locals love to eat this delicious fish raw! Get in there, you adventurer. You may also want to wash all that good food down with a drink or two, while chatting to your host about what else you can do and see for the rest of your trip.

You could explore the Nakasu district, where its neon-lit streets are flanked with trendy bars. Or you could take to Ningyo Shoji, a hub of tiny alleyways packed with charming, old-school izakaya and tachinomiya, where small plates of finger food yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) are the perfect accompaniment to a glass or two of sake!

  • Meet up with one of our local Fukuoka hosts to discover the city's must-sees before heading off to a game then meeting up again post-match to explore the city's food scene

  • See some of the city's most famous sites in one day, discovering its main attractions and the hidden gems that are tucked away nearby

  • Explore the food culture that appeals to you most - from fine dining to grabbing something on the go

  • Get a taste of coastal produce by sampling local dishes such as raw mackerel from the Genkai Sea

  • Order traditional dishes from local restaurants or sit down at a yatai for some famous Hakata ramen

  • Chat to your host, swap recipes and get recommendations for more great spots to eat whilst you’re in the city

FUKUOKA, KICKSTART YOUR TRIP TO FUKUOKA

October 2019

Wonderful start to my Fukuoka stay!

Company matched me with the perfect guide- I can't say enough wonderful things about John and his tour. Fun, informative and enjoyable. I felt that this tour was far more than sightseeing- John went above and beyond to not only show me many sights but to also answer all my questions and offer assistance and advice about my remaining time in Fukuoka. An excellent experience, I highly recommend.

FUKUOKA, HALF DAY IN FUKUOKA WITH A LOCAL

August 2019

4 hours in Fukuoka, Your way

Masumi Endo was EXCELLENT. She was in contact with us via e-mail before the trip and was punctual, knowledgeable and flexible regarding itinerary on day of trip. We basically went on a FOOD tour of the city that was SO tasty and fun! On her own time, she came back with us on the subway at the "end of the tour time" to make sure that we got off at the right stop. Above and beyond the call of duty! Highly recommend.

FUKUOKA, HALF DAY IN FUKUOKA WITH A LOCAL

August 2019

Everything I expected and more!

This was my first trip to Japan and I loved it. I was particularly interested in Fukuoka’s live music scene and nightlife. My tour guide, Masumi, was excellent. She shared useful info about the city, and introduced me to some great jazz and rock venues. I was even able to catch a live concert, thanks to her recommendations. A very fun tour! Recommended!
