What you’ll do

Centuries ago, Chinese traders settled in Nagasaki – Japan’s only “open port” city. Most of the city’s street food is of Chinese origin and you’ll taste a few at Chinatown, like Champon (noodles in a pork broth topped with seafood) or Kakuni Manju, steamed buns filled with tender pork belly. Try Nikuman (bao buns) or Omura sushi, then satisfy your sweet tooth – Nagasaki’s is insatiable! Introduced by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Castella, a fluffy sponge cake, is a must-try, as are traditional confections like Manjū (filled dough) or Ohagi (glutinous rice sweets). Still have room? Sample Biwa (jelly), and grab a bag of Yori Yori sweets (deep-fried, twisted cookies) for later.

    We enjoyed our time with Armand as he took us to try FRESH sashimi at a lovely restaurant. Everything there was delicious. After lunch we had a pleasant walk to a temple which was very beautiful. There we enjoyed a casual tea ceremony where we met some lovely locals celebrating a 90th birthday. The grounds were calming and serene. Next we walked through the city and an arcade to best ice cream shop! All in all a great day. Thank you Armand!

    Senyo made our day worthwhile. He was able to tell us his experiences when he first came to Japan. We also learned about his family. Our food tour had some interesting and very tasty foods to try. Overall it was a fabulous day for the 6 of us. Lastly, he insured that we arrived safely back at our port. Job well done Senyo!

    I booked a walking food tour of Nagasaki in November and was assigned Senyo as the guide. Senyo made early communication, including a survey, to establish our interests and tailor the tour specifically to us. He was very easy to talk to and it was evident that he really enjoyed meeting new people as a part of his job as a tour guide. During the tour itself, Senyo took us to some pre-planned destinations but was also extremely flexible and allowed us to alter the tour to suit the vibe we were looking for. It was a great way to see Nagasaki on foot and familiarise ourselves with the city. Senyo stayed to guide us longer than the actual tour was booked for because we were having so much fun and when he left us, he provided us with a detailed itinerary of how to catch the rope way up to Mt. Inasa where we saw the beautiful city lit up and evening fireworks. I could not recommend booking a tour with Senyo more highly. He really helped us make the most of the small amount of time we had in Nagasaki and showed us many hidden gems of the city!
