You could experience begin your day at Sensō-ji, the oldest temple in Tokyo which dates back to 645 AD, then fast forward a few thousand years into the city’s temple of youth culture: the Harajuku neighborhood. The streets here are really a catwalk for cutting edge fashion, cosplay and kawaii culture. You could play dress up and don a cosplay outfit, visit a crazy themed cafe like the Alice in Wonderland Cafe or just soak it all in.

Or perhaps let your host reveal a side of Tokyo that you never even knew existed? You may be surprised, but after you’ve run the gauntlet over Shibuya Crossing, you could discover a quieter pace of life in a local district like Sangenjaya. In this creative and artsy neighborhood where you’ll find a scattering of wooden buildings from the Showa period, interspersed with 1960s-style apartment blocks, peaceful temples, leafy parks and vintage shops.

We’d never forget about lunch, of course! What better way to discover a new culture than through its food? If it’s sushi you’re craving, you could head to Shinjuku, where there are sushi joints ranging from kaitenzushi (sushi train) to a high-end restaurant 14 floors high which has views over Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

Or, duck between the glass-fronted skyscrapers and eat your way along Omoide Yokocho instead. In this jumble of tiny izakaya bars, you can feast on small plates like gyoza and grilled skewers called yakitori. Or, dive into Tokyo’s ramen scene and let your host show you how to order ramen on a vending machine, or eat at the bar of a tiny, 9 seater ramen joint like Ra-mendainingu domiso.
