Trendy, urban, diverse

Over the last few years Brixton has exploded as the music, fashion and alternative culture capital of the city. Famous for its diverse food and clothing market where you can enjoy the best of the community’s Caribbean, Asian, African and West Indian cultural heritage still for a reasonable price. The recent influx of hipsters, artists and musicians has reshaped Brixton’s nightlife abuzz with indie, house, Latin and Jazz clubs.

Live music venues reign in the hometown of David Bowie. Brixton maintains an urban and gritty feel while being home to some of the most highly reputed contemporary art exhibits, fashionable clothing boutiques and beloved street art. Brixton is also host to a plethora of cosy independent coffee shops, offering some of the best espresso in the city. Here you can enjoy dancing all night at one of Brixton’s notorious “private parties” held in the community’s old industrial warehouses.

10:00

Breakfast at a small but hugely popular café

  • Think fresh, free-range, tapas-style Middle Eastern food with a special focus on breakfast! Their food is fantastic as everything is prepared with the utmost care and attention. The sourdough bread is a particular favourite, being baked fresh and warm alongside your mezze platters to share. They also claim to have the Rolls Royce of coffee machines so your coffee is subtle, balanced and strong! In addition to a really stellar breakfast they also have a wide-range of lunch and dinner favourites and of course an extensive drinks and cocktail menu. This is an ostensibly popular Brixton restaurant that is affordable, delicious and always packed out as a testament to the high-quality of the food.

11:30

Join a local for a tour of the market

  • The bustling and meandering market is the spirit of Brixton. The market consists of several diverse areas and features dozens of unique restaurants with fabulous gastronomy, a myriad of cafes, bars and more, most of which offer late night dancing and DJ sets in their downstairs, open-brick-faced rooms. Wandering the market is a must for any adventure to Brixton, whether you are a foodie who wants to sample the best of the wide-ranging international cuisines available or you are looking for rare pieces of jewelry, state-of-the-art designs or unique materials.

13:00

Enjoy the backstreets of Brixton, with Banksy art and boutiques.

  • Brixton is a vibrant and surprising community that always seems to have something new hidden along a narrow alley or down a cobbled residential street, where street art pops with colour and political messages. There are endless examples of independent boutiques, vegan bakeries, box park gardens, and other special features that are best discovered on foot. With your local you can witness the best of what’s bold about Brixton.

15:00

Coffee at a little café run by a celebrity chef

  • This is a small and comfortably cosy café run by one of London’s up and coming celebrity chefs. The cakes and bakes are exquisite and served on 1950s porcelain dishware. The ornaments, tables, teacups and selection of pastries all hark back to London’s original and classic tearooms. The staff are helpful and friendly and sometimes even willing to share some of their recipe secrets. It is the perfect neighbourhood café with moist cakes, great tea and coffee and hearty specials filled with warmth that are also perfectly spiced.

  • I am an experienced tour guide, artist and designer, with a passion for London. I was born and brought up here in London, which is the most vibrant mix of old and new. It has three thousand years of history, yet is always re-inventing itself. So it remains the most contemporary and cosmopolitan in the world, brim full of art, design, architecture, theatre and music. My interests are mostly based around, and my background is largely in; the Arts. Particularly fine art, pop art, graphic art, street art and architecture. I have a university BA Hons degree in Art and Visual Communication and I am also a designer and artist. There are many human stories to tell, behind London, behind it's history and behind it's art.

The best way to see Brixton

By Amelie R on 22 Feb 2016

We never would have ventured into Brixton had we not been encouraged to join a Local Host and explore an area of London that was not in our to-do list, but I'm glad we did because that really was the most memorable part of our trip. My friends and I loved Brixton Village and I can't wait to come back and trying out some of the other food places.

I love Brixton

By Kim Y. on 01 Feb 2016

Brixton is a really cool place in London and I think it will change and become more touristy so I am glad we saw it before. It was so nice to meet Ruxandra who was so friendly and fun and told us about the area and showed us some spots we couldn't found in the guidebook.

Really good idea

By Federic P on 25 Jan 2016

We decided to go to Brixton but weren't so sure where to go so this is a very good idea because we could find easily all the things to do and then Richard, our local, gave us some tips on the bars that were better than the ones we went in central London full of tourists.

Best tour ever

By Marion L. on 03 Jan 2016

I hate tours so I was not so keen to book this but actually it was really good because it was just me and my friends most of the time and we got to pick the things we wanted to do and we met George who was super friendly and told us about the area and some of the best shops. And we were so surprised to learn that Brixton is such a historical and important place in London.

Don't miss Brixton

By Stephanie W. on 27 Dec 2015

This is our third trip to London so we wanted to visit some “off the beaten track” places. We researched things to do in the area and we came across this “untour” which sounded great because we didn't want a tour with other people. The area has so much character and there is so much to do so it was really good to meet our guide who knew the places that we would like. I definitely will go back to Brixton in my next visit.

Brixton Rocks!

By Anna K. on 20 Dec 2015

My friends and I are big Bowie fans so we wanted to go visit his neighbourhood but we didn't expect it to be soooo cool! It really helped to meet George who helped us decide where to eat and helped us book tickets for The Charlatans at Brixton Academy. We had the best day!
